WATERCAT

A few of us are making the trip to Memphis for the BFF this weekend and I heard a few more may be joining in. For those who make it, in addition to the flicks, you may want to get in on some of this:

Word.

fixed city | Trailer updated! from fixed city on Vimeo.

According To Our Research...

"Research tells us that all the kids are crazy about these "fixed gear" bikes and urban bikes are the fastest growing segment of bike sales." I have no problem with the Specialized Langster. It's a nice aluminum track bike... for racing, which they know. Then, to capture more of the urban market, Specialized went and made all these absolutely horrible city-themed Langsters all of which sucked. Bad. Lately, big-S marketing bought a gang of 14 year old kids in the tuscon suburbs a case of PBR to show they had "street cred" and were "hip to the kids jive" -then took a crap-ton of notes to uncover what made a "legit" fixed gear. Specialized started in steel like most companies but hasnt been down that road in quite a while. Thats a shame, they were pretty tight. This new "fixie" (sic) is the bicycle equivalent of buying a hat with a pre-frayed bill, a baseball team wearing throwback jerseys, or jeans will holes already worn in; it's just not the same as the real thing. I think they did a decent job with the chromed ss/cs and threaded fork - execution was alright, but i'd rather support a company that still believes in steel for its inherent qualities, not just its current curb appeal. I want you to love me for my brains, body, and personality. Did I mention the dropouts are butt ugly? I wasnt able to find/ didnt look to see what tubeset it was built with but now i'm curious so if anyone knows, share?

An oldie but a goodie to get you motivated

Oh My

There's at least ten things wrong with this bike. What are they?

A Butcher, A Baker, A HPV Maker

So it seems that the shops latest mechanic has a dirty little secret. In addition to being a solid wrench and a cat4 cyclist, he also fancies himself an engineer. I knew he had to have something wrong with him, a skeleton in his closet, so i did some digging and it turns out he also rides giraffe unicycles. He seemed so normal.

Apparently A Lot Of Huntsvillians Need Some Zyrtec

Because I can't think of any another reason why we don't have more cyclists in the valley.

actually, the way some of them act, i think it's more IBS than allergies >: )

Weeklong Showers Bring Maintenance Flowers

It looks like we will be rained out for the Tuesday ride and Thursday polo. We had a nice weekend so we can't complain. Who knows how the weather will play out though. A few of us are going out of town this weekend for the BFF and I really need to do some some bike maintenance. Nothing ruins a bike trip like an avoidable mechanical. While I wrench, I'm open to sharing my tools and two-cents for those who need it. One more useful than the other. For those interested, I will try to post something the day of - right now Im not sure when. (tues, weds, or thurs)

Where Are You Go

Thanks to Mark for the heads up on this vid.

first of all

A few things tonight:

one, thanx to everyone who rode tonight (tuesday). thanx to clint for the tour de' hood, and thanx to thomas for the entertaining wreck and not getting hit. on a side note, it was my first trip to the nook which for those of you who dont know, has 1,000 beers on tap, some illegal in equador. aside from the douche bag (aka: unusually rude) regulars there, it was an awesome bar that i hope to frequent more. The plan is to claim the bar for ourselves, chase the lame regulars out, then just go back to voodoo where we'd really rather be anyways. its the principle! they dont even have darts and you need UV protection to be in there.

two, the twofive bus is planning a trip to Memphis not this weekend, but next, for the Bicycle Film Festival. dont be fooled by inferior imitators. you get what you pay for. we have limited spots available so please inquire within. Did i mention we will be participating in the film festival, gold sprints, alley cats, a few special events, and much much more. hit us up if you're interested and not in Spring City.

three, the Alabama Thundercat race will be held sunday june 7th at 2pm in Huntsvelle. the race is designed so you dont need to be from H'ville to be competitive and you will need a partner for teams of two. If you need a partner, drop us a line. we can make it happen. this will be a very fun event so make the drive! fun and fun is the emphasis here. also fun. did i mention we have an alcohol sponsor or two plus crazy prizes?

fourth, please come join us today (weds) for the ride of silence to honor those who have fallen on the streets. the ride will start outside of bicycles etc on meridian st at 7pm. come pay your respects and support the living.

fifthly, how sweet is that broakland above? props.

I <3 Spring

A few of us had enough time to squeeze in a last minute evening ride from downtown to the river tonight. Days like this remind me that the world can be a pretty grand place. On another note, everyone please come out for the rescheduled Mayor's Ride this Sunday 2pm at the kids fountain behind Early Works. Helmets are required andt here is a waiver you will need to sign so show up by 1:30. If you ride a bike in Huntsville, you need to be here for this and show the city we are a force to be reckoned with.

Big Ups

Thanks to everyone who rode tonight. Also thanks to everyone who came to the cookout and drank all the beer. Seriously though, it was good seeing all of you tonight for the ride and post-ride. We guess'timated the head count to be over 30 which is not too shabby for a weds night.

June 7th June 7th June 7th June 7th

Save the date motherfuckers! We are having a bicycle extravaganza in H'velle. June 7th, write it down. Details soon to follow.

Also, this thursday, local scottish terrier fighter, Tyler B, is hosting another game of rip-jims-spokes-out on the roof top across from the civic center. Others have referred to the game as, forgive my pronunciation, byke poh-loh (?). Anyhow, all the city kids tell us country bumkins that it's all the rage so what the heck Aunt B, we're gonna give it a try. Barn Raisin' to follow immediately afterwards.

The Rise And Fall Of Southern Cyclivity

Thanks for the guys who rode tonight. Fast and fun. Just a friendly reminder, the International Ride Of Silence will meet at Bicycles Etc at 7pm weds may 20th to honor brother cyclist who have been killed by automobiles. There are more and more every day.

Also coming up, the mayors ride with Huntsville mayor DJ Tommy B' this Sunday at 2PM at fountain circle.

Tuesday Night Lights!

Tuesday is going to be the best night to ride this week - may as well come do it with us and have fun. A lot of you keep coming up with bullshit excuses why you can't ride. It's always going to be easier to make excuses in life than to actually get off your ass and ride. Get out of the fucking forums pretending you ride and show up and support the local scene for a change. Otherwise give your bike to someone who will actually ride it.

Choder Boy

One more pic for the night; a mashed out Ciocc with some Campy and a killer H+

Tabs Are For Bars

So you got a new bike for the velodrome and you want to use that old track bike for a grocery getter? Wait a minute (!), my bike is made for the track and doesnt have any braze-ons or brake mounts; how am I going to mount a basket on it? Calm down my friend, we're going to make this happen. Check out this these new integrated basket-bars and shop your ass off.

Worst Idea Ever

To make National Bike To Work Week a little bit more exciting, phone company LG has decided it should motivate motorists to be even more distracted than usual by holding a text messaging contest the same week. The cell phone is the single most dangerous invention to cyclists and motorists alike and now you can get rewarded for your hard work. I encourage everyone to commute to work next week but if you look back and see a Mustang with a Hawaiian lay hanging from the mirror and a test-messaging teen barreling down the road at you, you may want to take a moment to get on the sidewalk for just a sec.

Have You Ever Met My BFF?

Looking for a fun roadtrip this month? Why not go to Memphis? Did I mention that the Bicycle Film Festival was going to be there May 29-30? Check it out, take pictures, and write me some copy!

Thanks For The Fun

Thanks to everyone who showed up for polo tonight. The weather was perfect and a full moon made for good rooftop game lighting. Thanks to Dustin for putting a mallet through a wheel and ending the fun >: ) we'll get the wheel fixed in plenty of time for next week. It has been a minute since some of us have got together and it was good seeing old faces. Some of the action was a little Kenny Powers'esque but it is just the first game and we have all the time in the world.

Pink Is The New Yellow

I think Shepard Fairey is a little overhyped but admit that he does do cool work and this is a pretty interesting video

We Be Polo Playin' Dawg,

A few others have finally caught on to the polo thing (it's only been a few years now) so H'ville needs to dig its mallets back out and get ready to show the South what up again. Our winter hiatus has gone on way too long. The Gentle Lovers and a new crop of players will be getting together this Thursday for a bout or three - drink-n-play rules apply, new players encouraged to join us, bouts start at 8(ish)

*edit* we are meeting up at the Koffee Klatch downtown around 8pm'ish

Brutal; Wear A Helmet

Winter

As if Oregon didnt have enough badass builders, check out some of the work of Winter Bicycles out of Eugene, Oregon.

Bootleg!

I've seen part of this already and it looks like the best one yet; I can't wait.
